Tooth extractions are dental procedures that are performed as a last resort to maintain or improve your oral health. Although Dr. Guirguis is primarily concerned with preserving your natural teeth, there are certain instances where one or more teeth may pose a serious threat to the rest of your mouth. In these cases, an extraction is generally recommended to remove the problematic tooth or teeth. There are two different types of extractions, including:
Simple Extractions
A simple extraction is performed when the entire tooth is above the gum line and can be removed in one piece.
Surgical Extractions
A surgical extraction is performed when part or all of the tooth is below the gum line and/or the tooth cannot be removed in one piece.
Did You Know?
Platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) is a substance taken from your own blood that your dentist may place after your tooth extraction to promote healing. PRF is basically a bioactive band-aid that improves blood supply, enhances healing, and shortens the recovery process.

What should I expect when having a tooth extraction performed by Dr. Guirguis?
When having a tooth extraction performed by Dr. Guirguis, you can expect to first have your mouth anesthetized so that you don’t feel anything during the extraction. Depending on the type of extraction being performed, you will also receive varying amounts of dental sedation. Generally speaking, simple extractions require light sedation, while surgical extractions may require a deeper level of sedation. Because of the sedation, most people do not have any memory of their extraction appointment.
Dr. Guirguis’ approach will vary depending on what extraction technique is used. For a simple extraction, he will use forceps and an elevator tool to gradually rock and lift the tooth out of the socket. For a surgical extraction, the affected tooth will be broken into pieces and then removed one piece at a time. Incisions may also need to be made in the gum tissue during a surgical extraction and sutures may be used.
What type of post-treatment care will I need to follow after an extraction?
After your extraction, Dr. Guirguis will provide you with detailed instructions on how to care for the extraction site in order to prevent infection and other complications. These instructions generally consist of keeping the extraction site clean, practicing good oral hygiene, eating soft foods, and avoiding certain activities like smoking or drinking through a straw.
